The MDGSA Executive 2009-2010:
President
Secretary
JC Beal
Hi Hi Hi
I am delighted, thrilled, excited, and proud to be MDGSA's secretary this year. I am a second year student in the program, and my research is into the popular ontology of 'globalization' as a perceived phenomenon. My undergraduate degree is a combined bilingual honors BA in International Studies and Philosophy from York and the University of Calgary. If you would like further info about publishing academic work with the Canadian Journal of Globalization, precious insights into the glamorous daily dealings of a secretary, or if you would simply like to be my friend, don't be a stranger; jbeal097@uottawa.ca
VP External
Michèle Meilleur-Sarazin
Hello everyone!
I'm very excited to be your VP External this year and work to get you and your association represented and connected on campus. This is my first year with the association but my seventh year at Ottawa U (I am a professional student) so please feel free to ask me any questions about your school and your city! I've been very involved on campus over the past few years as well as internationally. In fact, I just came back from 2 months in Zambia working with the Shared World Initiative and doing my thesis research on civil society and women with disabilities and am now in the process of writing! Any questions about creating your own placement abroad, don't hesitate to ask! I hope to see you all at the office and at our event throughout the year! Please drop by!

VP Finances
Emilie Senécal
Hi everyone!
I am proud to be your VP Finances for the second year!!!
While studying political science at UQAM, in Montreal , I did an international development internship in Mali . From then, I have a crush on Africaand development! So you understand why I am so interested in development issues related to Africa . By the way, I am doing my thesis on women in politics in Mali , and I will do some field research soon. And since I started the MDG program, I had the opportunity (or the chance) to do two COOP internships related to my research interests. Do not hesitate to contact me if you have questions on COOP internships, field research, ethics review, or anything else!!!
Looking foward to meet you!

VP Social
Nasya Razavi
Why, hello!
My name is Nasya, and I'm thrilled to be your new VP Social for 2009/10!
This is my second year in the MDG program and my research focuses on the recent reform of water legislation in Bolivia and its impact on water access within communities.
When I'm not buried under books in the library, I will be dedicating my time to fulfilling my duties as VP Social. All too often, the study-life balance veers off to one side and you end up tired, cold, confused (and possibly hungry) staring at your computer screen in vain. This is what the experts call "social isolation" and this is what we will try to avoid this year! The MDGSA has some great events in the works for you, and as your VP Social I will make sure you know all about them! If you have any suggestions, or questions about events or anything else MDG, please help feed my email-checking-compulsion and contact me at nasya.sara@gmail.com Ciao! Nasya
VP Academic
Asim Qasim
Hello everyone!
I am your VP academic for this year. I am in my second year in the MDG program. I have a wide range of interests in development including environmental issues, negotiations and peacebuilding, state building, and health issues. Right now I am researching the peace processes in Angola and Mozambique. I have worked part-time with NGOs and with the government in issues relating to health and the environment. I have traveled to a few places in Latin America, South Asia and Southeast Asia. I used to live in Abu Dhabi, UAE before I moved to Canada (I miss winters that would only go down to 18°C).
If you have any concerns or questions regarding the academic aspect of the program (or any questions for that matter), I would be happy to help!

VP International Affairs
Joanna Shackleton
Hi everyone. I'm delighted to be your VP of international affairs this year. I'm in my second year of studies at SIDGS, and will be in Nairobi, Kenya from September to December 2009, in order to complete my field research for my thesis, titled “Deafening: The Need for HIV/AIDS Programming for Deaf Kenyans.” I first became interested in the intersectionality of disability, HIV and Africa while volunteering at the Ashanti School for the Deaf in Kumasi, Ghana. I`m venturing to Kenya to work as a research intern for Handicap International Kenya-Somalia’s Deaf Empowerment Kenya program, to assess and evaluate the accessibility of the DEK program to Deaf Kenyans in and around the Nairobi area. The Department of Special Education at Kenyatta University has also agreed to provide me with academic research support through an informal exchange agreement. Although I will not be able to meet new students until the winter semester, I strongly encourages fellow MDG students to email her with questions about international opportunities, such as exchanges, field research courses, international internships, and scholarships for such adventures, because I have spent the last year investigating all of the above!
